Pregnant gypsy dances
to the tambourine in hand
and counts the coins
as they enter her purse.

Her belly spills over her
skirt.  The men love to
watch her anyway.

On Tuesdays, she sings
to the pigeon who shit
on her blanket and seeks
sanctuary at Mother Mary’s feet.

I like it, except for the inclusion of "shit." It feels out of place with the rest of the work. The problem, of course, is what can you substitute for "shit?" Not much. :(

I disagree, I think shit is a nice opposition to mother mary, the alliteration works nicely and flows. All round quite good, brutally honest and caring :)
